To dowse, you must know the Dowsing tech and have a Dowsing Rod in your inventory. This gives you a new action icon in upper portion of the screen.

Dowsing results are reported in your main chat if you have the "Utility -> Interface -> Use console..." option checked. If you have your chats minimized the result will not be posted in the main chat.
Note that an ore vein does not have to necessarily break cleanly along coordinate lines. It might be that at one edge of the square for coordinate (1000, 1000), there's just sand, and at the other edge for (1000, 1000) there's a vein of ore.
The highest perception required to dowse any metal is 28. ( See Dowsing Discussion Page. )
* Teppy has indicated in ENN on Feb14 that only Platinum and Gold require perception above 20 to detect (Platinum at 28)
* In this same chat, Teppy also suggested that Platinum could be inferred at perception 0 just by following iron veins
* Copper ore identifies as such even with a Perception of 0.
* Iron ore identifies as such with a perception of 1, unrecognizable at 0.
* Tin Ore identifies as Unrecognized with perception of 2.
:It is showing as Unrecognized for me with perception of 3 (built a mine to verify it was tin), so the table seems incorrect. --Inkoaten 06:27, 21 March 2009 (EST)
* Zinc Ore identifies as such with a perception of 6.
* Lead ore identifies as such with a perception of 7, unrecognizable at 6.
* Titanium is unrecognizable at 9. Visable at 10.
* Antimony is not unrecognizable or seen at 10. Antimony dowsed as sand at 14, unrecognizable at 17, and as Antimony at 20.
* Aluminum ore identifies as such with a perception of 4
* Silver identifies as unrecognizable with a perception of 18.
* With a perception of at least 22 (may be less) when near a vein of Tungsten or Magnesium it will state you detect a vein of Magensium Ore nearby (or tungsten).
* Strontium ore identifies as such with a perception of 20(updated4/08/09)-taffer.
Overview
A terrarium is used to breed Beetles for the Test of Khefre's Children. (To store beetles without breeding them, use a Khefre's Locker instead.)

Source
This building becomes available after you have learned the Entomology technology from a University of Worship.

Cost
*12 requires::Sheet Glass
*3 requires::Linen
*100 requires::Dirt
Built in a Compound. Uses 9x9 cells.

Use
Beetle browsing
You can use the arrows at the bottom of the window to browse the currently loaded beetles. You can also browse through the beetles in your inventory by clicking on the center button labeled "inventory". This is a toggle.

Breeding
You need at least one male and one female to begin breeding. Children beetles inherit (mix) the characteristics of their parents, with a small randomness from mutations. For more information see the Beetle Breeding Guide.

The beetle population will not update on its own, you must do something to "refresh" the terrarium beyond just clicking on it, such as clicking the left and right arrows to browse through the beetles.

Cabbage consumption
Beetles eat cabbage while they are in the terrarium. Expect to run through at least 200 cabbage per real life day breeding beetles. Upgrading with a thermometer will cut the amount of cabbage consumed by 1/3 (beetles will only eat 2/3 as much). If you run out of cabbage, the beetles will stop breeding and some will disappear.

Over crowding
Beetles will start disappearing if there are too many of them in the terrarium. It has been suggested that this cutoff begins at about 15 beetles, though the actual population can climb into at least the high 20s. The beetles which disappear can be named ones you've placed in the terrarium, so be especially careful leaving your favorite beetle unattended.

Overview
A barrel vice is used to create Small Barrels.

Source
This building becomes available after you have learned the requires::Cooperage skill.

Cost
* 2 requires::Brass Plate
* 6 requires::Copper Sheeting

Use
The barrel vise allows you to create small barrels in a fashion reminiscent of, but simpler than, charcoal production.

Barrel Cost
To make a produces::Small Barrel:
* 100 Boards
* 2 Copper Straps
* fuel::Wood to run the barrel vice. (The amount is variable, but 75 to 100 wood per barrel is a good rule of thumb.)

Controls
Operating a Barrel Vice is pretty simple -- there's only one control: add wood. You just have to be careful not to let the flame get too high, since there's no way to cool down the flame (as there is in a Charcoal Hearth), apart from letting it die down of its own accord.

There are four indicators:
* Fuel/wood shows how much wood is currently in the vice. Fuel is consumed at a rate of one per tick. There is no numerical indicator, but you only need to discern whether there is 0, 1, or 2+ wood in the vise.
* Flame shows the flame height. If the flame reaches 100% of the indicator, the barrel will incinerate, and you will lose your boards and copper straps.
* Heat affects progress. Higher heat = faster progress. Heat will rise each tick if flame is currently higher than heat, or fall if flame is lower.
* Progress, of course, shows how 'done' the barrel is. It only goes up, and only increases when heat is above 50%.

Approach
The idea is to keep the heat high, but not let flame reach 100%, which would incinerate the barrel. The higher the heat, the faster you make progress. You will only make progress when the 'heat' indicator is above 50%.

NOTE: the heat indicator turns red when it is above 50% and you will start to see "progress" rising after the color change. Dianess 9:34, 5 April 2009 (EST)

Once you have the vise going, you will add 0, 1, or 2 wood each tick. Each tick, the flame will go up, down, or down a lot, depending on whether there is currently 2+, 1, or 0 wood in the vice's fuel chamber. The amount the flame goes up or down is random, but the downward shifts are far greater in magnitude than the upward shifts.

The important decision is when the fuel is at 1 wood. If you overshoot, the barrel incinerates, and you lose the boards, straps, and any wood in the vice. If you undershoot, you just end up using more wood to make the barrel. You will very quickly get a feel for how much the flame can rise during a tick.

Eventually, you will tweak the start-up, sometimes adding 1 wood when there's still 2 wood, just to get the flame higher, and also learn when you can stop adding wood, and let the vise coast to a finish.

The amount of wood you use will go down as you get better at knowing when to add more wood. When you first start out, you may use anywhere from 70-80 wood, but have at least 100 on hand, just in case.

Skill Increases
As you produce more barrels, your Cooperage skill level goes up (slowly), to a max of 7. You make more progress with each tick at higher skill level, meaning it takes less wood.

A Conservative Procedure
# Click on vise, choose 'Make a barrel' (requires 2 copper straps and 100 boards)
# Add 6 wood to the vice. (the 'add' button on the control widget)
# Wait until fuel is down to 1 wood.
# Manage flame:
#* If fuel = 2 wood, do not add wood
#* If fuel = 0 wood, add 2 wood
#* If fuel = 1 wood, then you have to make a decision: if the flame is too close to the top of the bar, don't add wood. Otherwise, add 1 wood.
# Repeat until barrel is complete.

A barrel grinder is used to grind certain metals into powder.

Use
Produces produces::Silver Powder or produces::Aluminum Powder

You can load the grinder up with up to 100 requires::Silver or requires::Aluminum metal. You then wind the handle and it will grind for 20 secs. If someone else winds again in this time period the timer resets to 20 secs. If the grinder stops, it breaks, requiring repair costing 4 leather and 4 oil.

Since winding has an Endurance timer of 120 secs, you need a team, good food and a method to synchronize team members. Endurance food with a 21 boost will allow 2 people to pull every 15 seconds. 36 end should allow solo grinding. (stat notes are from T3)

10 Silver Powder or 10 Aluminum Powder is produced from 1 metal every 15 seconds and can be used as a timer if your food permits.
Overview
An apiary allows you to keep bees which produce produces::Honey and produces::Beeswax.

Source
This building becomes available after the Beekeeping technology is learned at a University of Worship.

Cost
*8 requires::Boards
*1 requires::Linen

Use
When building a hive, try and set one up away from crowded areas. The /crowd command can return the relative crowding of an area - under 14% is best.

When first built, the apiary is empty and must attract a queen bee before it begins producing. Important: after you check for a queen and it has one and about 1000 bees check immediately again. The hive will not produce any Honey or Beeswax until you do this. You can wait but no one has reported so far losing the queen.

When harvested, the apiary may lose half its bees (max is 1000), slowing production of the next batch. An apiary produces at most 10 Honey and 10 Beeswax between harvests. After you have checked it for the first time wait approximately 16 hours for first full 10 Honey/Beeswax. After this you can collect about every 7 hours.

The higher your speed stat, the less bees escape when you check the apiary, and thus less time before another 10 Honey/Beeswax. Removing the Honey & Beeswax does not allow the bees to escape. This only happens when you check the apiary.

Honey/Beeswax will not build up in the apiary. If there is already 10 of each when you check, it will be overwritten with another 10.

Source
This building becomes available to be built after the Advanced Blacksmithing technology is learned at a University of Art & Music. (But an anvil can be operated with only the Blacksmithing tech).

*120 requires::Firebricks
*4 requires::Water in Jugs

Built in a Compound. Uses 7x13 cells.

Use
An anvil is used to create various metal tools by shaping a block of metal into a specific pattern. Using an anvil requires the Blacksmithing tech.

This uses various smithing tools, each with a different pattern in pushing metal:
*Ball Peen Hammer
*Round Hammer
*Shaping Mallet
*Wide Tungsten Chisel

The finished products are assigned a quality based on how close they are to the goal. The higher the quality, the more effective the tool, with 9999 being perfect. An anvil can produce the following:

*Shovel - 10 metal; 4 wood to complete; require 6000+ to be effective
*Carpentry Blade - 1 metal; requires quality 3000+ to be used
*Hatchet - 20 metal
*Resin Wedge - 7 metal

from any of the following metals, with stronger metals allowing more hits before the piece becomes too fragile to work.

*Copper - 160 hit limit
*Iron - 180 hit limit
*Brass - 200 hit limit
*Bronze - 210 hit limit
*Steel - 220 hit limit
*Sun Steel - 240 hit limit
*Moon Steel - 250 hit limit
*Thoth's Metal - 260 hit limit
*Water Metal - 250? hit limit
*Metal Blue - 280 hit limit
*Octec's Alloy - 320 hit limit

For details on technique, please check out the Blacksmithing Guide.
Leaves are harvested from a different foliage plant each Egyptian week and are marked with the week in which they were harvested. After roughly 4 Egyptian weeks they turn into Compost, the use of which is currently unknown. Harvesting yields 7 leaves per plant.

Leaves are used to feed ants in Ant Colonies. 21 leaves at a time can be placed inside a seeded colony. In addition, leaves are used to keep Queen Ants alive when outside of a colony. In both cases, the leaves must be from the current week.
Heavy pollution can affect leaf production, causing a plant to stop producing leaves entirely.
Queen Ants
After being built, the colony must first be seeded with a Queen Ant. If the colony currently has a live queen, you will be able to see the ants moving.

Queen ants can be obtained either by examining plants or as a byproduct of another ant colony. The option to examine a plant will not appear on wood bearing trees, cacti, or thorn-giving plants. Using the hotkey 'E' will also work. However, be warned - queen ants will die in approximately 5 minutes if you do not have any fresh leaves (current week) in your inventory.

Care and Feeding
Ants eat Leaves. Only 21 leaves can be added at any given time, and only the current week's leaves can be added to the tank in any given week. Older leaves, even the previous week, are not suitable. As the week changes, if there are sufficient leaves provided, the colony's health will increase and the leaves will vanish.

There is a Leaf History available that shows the types of plants needed for fresh leaves each week.

Overview
An acid bath is used to create Metal Salts.

Source
This building becomes available after you have learned the Neutralization tech.

Cost
*1 requires::Oyster Shell Marble
*4 requires::Canvas

Built in a Compound. Uses 3x5 cells.

Use
Using an acid bath requires the Neutralization tech, and requires you to have a non-alloy metal in inventory or else you will not get an interaction menu. For every type of non-alloy metal in inventory, the menu will give a menu option for "Make Salts of (metal type)."

To successfully start the process, you need:
* 1 Acid
* 1 Potash
* 25 Water in Jugs (jugs are not consumed)
* 7 Metal

Metal salts will be produced in the bath at a rapid, but decreasing pace.
* 2 salts are produced almost instantly
* After roughly an hour, 14 salts will have been produced.
* After 1 day, roughly 28 total salts will have been produced
* After 1 week, roughly 42 total salts will have accumulated.

The process can be stopped at any time and the salts collected.

Note: There is no apparent upper limit to total production - there were cases in previous tales of well over 100, but that takes several months. But, unless you have way more marble and compound space than metal, most people tend to harvest the salts at somewhere between the 1 day and 2 week point.
*6 requires::Canvas
*60 requires::Water in Jugs (consumes jugs as well as water)

Built in a requires::Small Construction Site

Use
When first built, you must seed it with 10 grass and then leave it for a period of time. Up to 100 grass will grow, then no more until it is harvested. Harvested grass remains in the greenhouse until it is taken (effectively infinite grass storage if you don't take).

Grass growth is simple - a greenhouse grows 3 grass per teppyminute until 100 grass has grown since the last time it was harvested. This process is completely linear, which means that it takes 20 teppyseconds to grow 1 grass, and 33 teppyminutes and 20 teppyseconds to grow 100 grass.

The greenhouse is also used for cross breeding, by using one of the item crossed on each of the two splints in the greenhouse and one Nut's Essence. After 15 minutes, a new item will be made from the two you put it, bearing some of the genetics of each of the parents. You can then remove it and use it as you would normally an item of that type. Flax seeds, flower bulbs, and vine cuttings can all be crossbred this way (though only a like item with a like item - vines with vines, flax with flax, etc.)
A Star Rack is where you craft Stars for Pyrotechnics.

Source
This building becomes available once you have started the Test of Pyrotechnics.

Cost
* 40 requires::Boards

Built in a Compound. Uses 7x7 cells.

Use
The star rack is used to create batches of a specific pyrotechnics star. You must have learned the specific recipe from a University of Art & Music to see the option to create those stars on the rack.

The minimum batch size to avoid rounding of ingredients appears to be 10.

* See the Star Recipes page for costs of specific stars and where their recipes may be learned.

Drying times
The stars will dry at a rate of one star every 30 teppySeconds, regardless of batch size.

You cannot remove stars while there are some in the batch still drying.

Abysmalminton:

T3

Raeli ovens are semi-automated structures used to manufacture Raeli Tiles. Raeli ovens are built on patches of clay (from which the tiles are produced) and cannot be built within 50 coordinates (800 feet) of another Raeli oven. Raeli ovens are available after learning the Raeli Pottery technology from the University of Art & Music.

Operation
Raeli ovens continually dredge clay from the ground, accumulating it as unbaked Raeli tiles. At any time the owner may start baking the accumulated tiles; this costs 25 charcoal and halts the dredging process. All tiles must be baked together -- it is not possible to bake some tiles and leave the others unbaked. It is not possible to remove unbaked tiles from an oven.

As the Raeli tiles bake, they gradually change color. All tiles begin as White and slowly cycle through a progressively darkening series of colors in 360 decrements that can vary by as much as 10%, ending up as Black after 6 hours of game time, or a bit more than 2 hours. The exact colors that tiles pass through on their transition from White to Black depends on where the Raeli oven was built.

The owner of the Raeli oven may interrupt the baking process at any time to stop the tiles at a particular color. Once tiles have stopped baking, they cannot be re-baked later to change their color. After halting the baking process, the Raeli oven can be restarted to dredge new tiles.

If you are in need of Raeli Tiles, but do not have access to an oven (or to an oven that produces the colors you want), browse to the Tile Trading Page.

Colors
Please record your oven colors at the Raeli color page.

Notes
*If you stand too close to another Raeli when attempting to use yours, you may get a message "Another Raeli interferes with the operation". To work around this apparent bug, just move to the opposite side from the interfering Raeli Oven.

*If you begin baking tiles before the first tile appears, no charcoal is used. So if you don't get a tile in the first two minutes, its probably a good idea to restart the oven for free.

*Restart an oven if it takes more than 7-8 minutes to get 2 tiles. 25 per Teppy hour is an exceptional rate.

*The Raeli Oven window updates on its own, so you don't have to click on it to see if the color has changed. Additionally, the color color swatch of the oven updates each game minute, even though the named color name stays the same. This is similar to how a paint color actually covers a range of RGB values in a pigment laboratory. There's a spreadsheet tool available for managing your Raeli Ovens that includes inventory control and a nice chart that allows you to understand why the oven is producing certain colors, and approximately when they will express. You can take a screenshot, an hour or so into the run is best as 50% Luminance gives you the best definition, to determine the HSL vector thereby the nearest RGB values for the entire sequence. See http://www.marvl.com/oven.12.htmland the related spreadsheet.

*The HSL vector of an oven, and therefore the colors that it can produce, is determined where you build it. Where you stand, or the time of day, makes no difference.

*The timing is a bit erratic, however, so you'll see a variations of up to 5 game minutes for fleeting colors and up to 10% in the number of game minutes during which a long cycle color is produced. The timing is not locked to either game time nor real time, and it's not stepwise decremental. When taking snapshots every 20 seconds, to catch a sample every game minute, we've seen a fleeting colors that displayed for only 1 game minute on one run, but for a full 5 game minutes on a second run. See Raeli Science for some well documented baking runs, including repeated runs while standing in exactly the same spot.

*If your oven just barely includes a particular color, catching it could be a hit or miss proposition, which is probably the origin of the old wive's tale regarding avatar position. In truth, the varience is due to the vagaries of running an asynchronous daemon in the background, and the HSL vector doesn't vary.

*You must be within 3 coordinates of the oven to start a baking or dredging cycle.

*The color displayed on the oven's menu will only update if you are within about 8 coords of the oven.
