The fourth telling of A Tale in the Desert allows for the customisation of four types of male and female avatars. From December 2009, approximately one real life year after the start of the telling, it was possible to customise each avatar to allow for greater flexibility.

Many players change their avatar clothing throughout the tale although this can be limited.
