Before you can log in you must set your webpass in game: Log into the game and type '''/webpass atitd.org ''password''''' (meaning you replace '''''password''''' with your password).

Once you have created a web pass you log in here with "Login with OpenId" (top right).

You should be sent to a page to then type in your account name and password you set in game with the webpass command. If you logged in to openid recently, it won't ask again.

If you forget your password, just re-set it in-game by using the webpass command again.

Welcome to A Wiki in the Desert, a wiki for the Massively Multiplayer On-line Role-Playing Game [http://www.atitd.com A Tale in the Desert].

This wiki exists to document the game and to provide a community scratchpad for the players. You can find [[Guides]] on things such as growing Flax, an [[Atlas]] of interesting places, and various personal pages created by the [[Special:ListUsers | Users]] and [[Guilds]]. If you're looking to buy and sell, try [[Trading]]. Visit the [http://www.atitd.org/ community portal] for lots of info on current events, debates on the forums, or just random chatter.

Anyone with an ATITD game account can edit any page on this site, but you have to [[Special:OpenIDLogin|log in]] first. Please read the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents user's guide] and information on [[Help:Formatting | formatting]] to see how to edit, and read our [[Policies]] before editing. Politics are not welcome (exception: [[Special:ListUsers | Users]] pages, but no personal attacks please) and, if you want to discuss something such as [[laws]], you'll find the [http://www.atitd.org/forum forums] more suitable. If you have any difficulties, please ask around in game or contact a [[A Tale in the Desert:Administrators|wiki admin]].

As I write this, we're days away from the release of A Tale in the Desert V. We'll go live:

Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 12:00 Noon EDT (GMT-0400)

Last Saturday, as ATITD IV concluded, we learned that Sami won the majority of citizens' votes, and ascended as Pharaoh. In electing Sami over Wahim, players voted to falsify the two monuments that were completed, and instead implore the scientists in Tale V to create seven new technologies. The following player-designed skills and technologies will be released during A Tale in the Desert V:

Foraging - The ability to memorize correct foraging techniques after 7 consecutive correct attempts
Preservation - Allows one to wrap up a fresh cooked meal that can be eaten on the road
Advanced Silkworm Farming - Allows changing silkworm diets by use of fresh leaves
Aquaculture - Ability to grow papyrus in camp
Herbology - Accurate prediction of aqueduct towers locations that will aid growth of herb seeds
Fertilization - Production of a one-dose-needed, slow-acting fertilizer
Molecular Balance - Comparison of the genetic weights of two plant genomes

I've made a bunch of other changes for Tale 5: I'm particularly proud of the mining system, which I've written about before, and which has undergone some evolution during our beta. I'll describe how mining iron works, though each kind of ore has somewhat different rules.

You'll be presented with a field of 7 different orestones. Some are red, some yellow, some green. (There is a colorblind-compatible mode available) Also, some of the orestones are covered by spikey crystals, some with cube-shaped, and some long and thin. The goal is to find three stones which:

All 3 are identically colored, or all 3 differently colored
All have the same crystal shapes, or all differently shaped

It takes some concentration - it feels hard at first. But when you find a set of three - known as a workload - it's worth about 100 ore. Sometimes it will be worth much more than that - several hundred, or occasionally even a thousand. When you do find one of these huge workloads, you can call over friends who can also harvest the same workload for an equally large amount.

Furthermore, there are bonuses for finding multiple workloads in one field, and for finding rare 4 stone workloads, and all of these bonus amounts can be stacked. This description doesn't do it justice - it's taken an aspect of the game that has always been tedious, and made it into something entirely addictive.

The fishing system has also been totally replaced. It's irritated me for some time that ATITD, with perhaps the most complex tradeskill system of any online game had such a rudimentary fishing system. No more: there are now 49 species of fish. You'll notice that some fish have preferences for certain bait, or certain geographical habitats, seasons, times of day, and other peculiarities. In addition to the 49 kinds of meat, each from a different fish, fish may contain roe, or scales in many colors (there's an entire science to this), or other by-products that you may discover a use for.

In addition to fishing itself being a multi-level practice-based skill, there's a whole skill devoted to fly tying itself. Another new skill, Arthropodology, will help you discover the really rare insects on which your flies are based. And finally, you can learn the filleting skill - also multi-level - to increase usable meat when a kitchen isn't handy.

There's plenty more to discover, and I'm looking forward to the most fascinating Tale yet. See everyone Saturday!

A Tale in the Desert supports the [http://openid.net/ OpenID standard] for single signon between Web sites. OpenID lets you log into many different Web sites without using a different password for each. Our goal is to allow you a single account with a single password to game, wiki and forum, and any other services we add in future to this site.

== Using OpenID in A Tale in the Desert ==

Before you can log in you must set your webpass in game:
* Log into the game and type '''/webpass atitd.org ''password'''''
** (meaning you replace '''''password''''' with a password of your choice - but not your game or bank one!).
* Wait till you see the notification in game that your account data has been uploaded.
* Your OpenID URL is '''atitd.org/openid/tale5/''YourName''''' or, for people not on the original shard, '''atitd.org/openid/tale5/''YourName_SHARDNAME'''''
** (where '''''YourName''''' is your game user name and SHARDNAME is the name of a shard, e.g. Bastet)
** So, Sami in T5 original shard is plain atitd.org/openid/tale5/Sami while Sami on the Bastet shard is atitd.org/openid/tale5/Sami_Bastet

This OpenID URL can be used with any site that accepts OpenID - including the atitd.org wiki and forums, but potentially any other third party site.

=== To log in to the wiki ===
* Go to the OpenID login page (click the "login with openid" link at the top right)
* In the OpenID URL box, enter your game user name (e.g. "Sami") and add "_Bastet" if you're from the Bastet shard
** this should look like one of:

** (optionally, you can enter the full OpenID URL, atitd.org/openid/tale5/''YourName'', but why bother?)
* Click submit
** This will take you to the atitd.org openid server, where you have to enter the password you set in the webpass command above
** If you are already logged in via this server, it will remember you and you will skip this step
* After entering a correct password, you should then be returned to the wiki and successfully logged in

* Go to the login page (click the "Login" on the upper right side of the page)
* In the OpenID box, enter your username as in game and select your shard
** (you can also use '''atitd.org/openid/tale5/''YourName_ShardName''''' but the short form is easier)
* Click submit
** This will take you to the atitd.org openid server, where you have to enter the password you set in the webpass command above
** If you are already logged in via this server, it will remember you and you will skip this step
* After entering a correct password, you should then be returned to the forum and successfully logged in
** On first login, it will prompt you to create a forum account to bind to this OpenID account - we'd recommend you use your game name

Once you're logged in to the forums, you may wish to set a local password (go to your user control panel->profile->account settings) so you can then use the forum login method (login page below the OpenID stuff) instead. This is only required for moderators/admins.

== Difficulties logging in ==

If you have problems logging in, first ensure that you have set your webpass as above.

Second, ensure you aren't blocking cookies for atitd.org (use this [http://atitd.org/account/cookietest.php cookie tester]).

If neither of those solves the problem, post to [http://atitd.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=34 this forum], come to #atitd-wiki in [http://atitd.org/irc/ IRC] or contact FaceAnkh ingame.

== Third party sites ==

Third party sites can also use the atitd.org openid server to confirm the identity of users, meaning they won't need to reregister for each site. The process is fairly straightforward and example PHP code is available (implementations in many other languages too). You do not need to ask permission or arrange for access - the server is open.

=== Brief instructions ===

See the example OpenID consumer at http://faceankh.atitd.org/consumer/ (download code from http://faceankh.atitd.org/openid_consumer.tar.gz).

I've taken the basic [http://openidenabled.com/ JainRain PHP OpenID consumer], added some notes, restricted it to accept only atitd.org OpenIDs (easy to revert if you wish) and added a snippet of code that auto prepends atitd.org/openid (if unspecified) so you can just use USERNAME for the login.

Notes on the basic code flow: index.php is the main HTML frontend. When you submit the form from there, info goes to try_auth.php, which checks various things (including the atitd.org restriction) and redirects the user to the openid server. The openid server will return the user to finish_auth.php with a yes/no.

You'll need to edit the $store_path variable in common.php to something unique (see notes there) - this specifies where temporary session files are kept.

You'll possibly want to throw away index.php or just recode it into your style.

You'll want to add your user session variable/cookie to the "yes" part of finish_auth.php and send the user on from there to your main pages.

I'd suggest you dump all the PAPE stuff (allows one to request the server uses particular means of authentication) - we don't support it :/

=== Troubleshooting ===

A common problem is if your trust root (openid.realm in the GET URL) doesn't match the return_to URL (openid.return_to), the JainRain server tends to go boom (white page @ atitd.org/account). It seems to be fussy about funny characters (particularly URL encoded ones) in the trust root. An example of this is if you come from a default mediawiki with openid extension, it sets the realm to "http://.../mywiki?title=" which makes the atitd.org server blow up. Force your realm/trust root to a lower subpart of the URL, e.g. "http://.../mywiki".
