The Principles of Architecture is the initiation into the discipline of Architecture. To complete it, you have to build a compound and expand it to at least 16 sectors. As a reward you gain a level and access to the Tests of Architecture.

Note: While you must build the compound, you do not necessarily have to expand it yourself.

The Principles of Architecture can be started at any School or University of Architecture, via the "Tests" menu. You must be level 1 or higher to sign up.

Guide

First you need the Compound Construction skill from the School of Architecture. This will allow you to construct a compound.

Find an open place a bit away from foliage, buildings and roads and select Projects → Compound → Initial Style: Town House, then chose an orientation from the list. The orientation is where the "door" to the compound will be and you will be slightly limited in expanding into that direction. You can use [F4] to help you find the right orientation.

Note: If you have a paid account, you can add a cornerstone to prevent deterioration by clicking on the outer border of the compound and choosing Utility → Install a Cornerstone.

A beginning Town House style compound starts with a footprint of 2 by 3 sectors. To reach the 16 sectors required by the principles, you need to expand the compound and add ten more sectors. To do that, click on the outer border and then choose Blueprints → Edit blueprints → Building shape → Add a sector and finally click on the outer wall. After these steps, you need to load the materials for the expansion, which will depend on how many walls, floors and extra features you added.

The most compact 16-sector compound has a footprint of 4 by 4 sectors, and this is also the most cost-efficient way to expand your compound.

Note: After you edit the blueprints the compound will be in expansion mode until you finish loading all materials. In the mean time you will not be able to maintain or create new buildings in the compound.
