There are always 12 otter holes. This is a clock face. The physical layout is irrelevant.

When building a map a good method is 2 part: draw a clock face paper map and tracking the otters movements

* On paper draw a clock face with the layout 1-12 in the normal clock configuration
* pick up @144 sand or mud to use as otter hole markers
* turn off auto-pick up piles in the One Click Options menu
* find each otter hold and drop a load of sand so that each hole has a sand marker
** 1 sand, 2 sand, 3 sand, 4 sand ... 12 sand
** dump the rest of the sand away from the holes
* now start your hunt as described
** as you progress tracking the otter to each hole, check the sand marker number and mark your paper clock map with the lines as indicated in the guide
* every time you find 3 lines that connect at any given number make an attempt to catch the otter at that marker
** if you don't catch the otter at that marker then you can eliminate it from future testing
** as you eliminate each hole with 3 lines you limit the remaining possibilities eventually narrowing down the final capture point

Often times, first otter trappers can use over 50 boards if you forget to remove older boards and the otter eats them.

You can trap the otter using only 3 boards but it's wise to carry at least 10.
