Timing Research

  • For SRG in T7 I'm getting: 1st weed after 40 sec, 2nd weed 20 sec, 3rd weed 20 sec, then harvest after 25 sec. You have about 18 sec to weed before seed appear --Amon-Sul
  • For Old Dog it's 35 sec before first water. Then 20 sec for 2nd, and further 20 for the weeding (3rd action). Harvest ready 20 sec on. For a total of 95sec. Seeds appear after 15 sec non-action. --Amon-Sul

Ecology Research

Afrah's Wood Plane Tests

Motivated by numerous anecdotal reports of Symphony Ridge Gold being a temperamental strain, and a rumor that wood planes were an issue, I decided to do some tests:

Test 1

Planted a plot of SRG next to two wood planes that had been recently used, in an area that had otherwise never seen an SRG failure. The plot failed.

Test 2

The wood planes were near trees. I had to rule out interference from the forest, so I tested a plot of SRG next to three trees, with no wood planes nearby. The plot provided its normal yield. Therefore, I have determined that the wood plane was the specific problem.

Test 3

I planted SRG plots evenly spaced edge-to-edge beginning at the pair of wood planes, and moving onward away from them. The first three plots failed, and the remainder of them yielded the normal amount of flax. So, SRG fails within three flax lengths of a wood plane, in this particular soil.

Conclusions

Wood planes do seem to affect Symphony Ridge Gold yield, within about three flax-bed-widths, after recent use.

Old Dog

Rhaom has verified the same range of effect with Old Dog.

Discussion

While we can't verify this with soil tests yet, Ariella and I have hypothesized that the culprit is soil acidity, from sawdust. Based on anecdotal reports, some areas may not grow the acidity-sensitive strains at all because they have natural acidity that is not suitable for them.

Hailiah's Observations

Just to note, I've been planting Constitution Peak almost all the time, however I tried to grow Sinai Sage, Jacobs Field, Symphony Ridge Gold and Sunset Pond instead and they all failed to produce flax where as Constitution Peak, Old Egypt and Nile Green still do.

From beta

  • Possible/Likely reasons for pollution A: Trees, Thorns, Wood Planes or Brick Racks - I guess mushrooms were the reason --Unsigned
  • Seems that even with hotkeys turned off, a recent change was made to force the player to run to each bed. Hopefully enough players can give negative feedback about this change to get it changed back to how it was before. For those of us that get a lot of server and client lag spikes, this can be very challenging to keep up with the timing of things. --Unsigned
  • The interval between harvests when growing seeds have always seemed to be approximately 60 Plur seconds but they now seem to vary by type of flax. These are approximately values: OD 60 Plur seconds, SS 55 Plur seconds or 1 RL minute, SRG 70 Plur seconds. Only did one test of each and was timing using my wrist watch. The total time from planting the flax bed to it disappearing needs checked for duration. --Zotep

  • Flax is based on pollution. There are many types of pollution and at least two diffrent types react with flax. Growing one flax raises pollution A while lowering pollution B. while another might lower A and raise B. only way to figure out which flax does what will be ecology skill. When out of beta, if we cannot get 1 flax that is resistant to all pollution, than I would suggest cross breeding two diffrent strands of flax to use in parallel. --Lazybum
