Basic Gearbox Information

General Gearbox Rules

Gear boxes are hard to work with because the nominclature is hard to figure out.

  • x/n - means the gears are adjacent. This is called a MESH.
  • x * n - means the gears are on top of each other AND the next row(s) of gears need a spacer underneath them (or other gear).
  • All gears must start at A1. This is called the INPUT.
  • All gears finish on ROW 8 This is the OUTPUT ROW.
  • The target gear must have the required output on ROW 8 + THE LETTER indicated in the gear request.
eg H120 - must have 120% on row H8 to be "correct". This is called the OUTPUT.
  • When using Analyze - the only values of importance are the ones for the OUTPUT ROW.
Intermediate results are not relevant to the final gearbox.
  • If 2 gear boxes are described - you need 2 gear boxes (quarries). The gear boxes may have more outputs than requested.
eg 3 output box will work for a 2 output request - provided the 2 of those outputs are correct.
  • There can be a max of 3 gears (layers) (gears or spacers) on any peg.
  • If gears "jam" its because they are on the wrong layer.
  • There is a max of 15 pegs
  • There is a max of 30 gears (total). Spacers count as 1 in the total.
  • To "carry" an output to the output row without changing the value place a 3 or 4 gear ON TOP or UNDERNEATH it and then form a chain to the location.
eg lets say you have the desired speed at C3 and you need to take it to F8. Place a 3 or 4 gear ON TOP or UNDERNEATH the gear at C3 and form your chain. You will need to place spacers for all gears on layers 2 (or 3). The tricky part is spacers count as 1 in the totals, so you may need to place the "chain" on layer one and put your "desired gears" on layer two.
  • The build table shows the locations and layers of the gears. There is a max of 3 gears on a peg (cell). They are read L-R as layer 1 2 3. The numbers represent the type of gear and a 1 means a spacer at that spot.
eg 345 gear 3 is on layer 1 / gear 4 is on layer 2 / gear 5 is on layer 3
eg 114 there are spacers on layer 1 and 2 and gear 4 is on layer 3
