April 2009 on E!

  • 2009-04-07 00:01:36 Korrin: ******Good Evening all! Welcome to the DP debate! From this point forward, for the next hour, no other posts will be posted. We may even open up to general audience questions, if time permits. I now turn over the convo to Quin, your host and Fabulous Intervier****
  • 2009-04-07 00:03:06 Quin: Greetings Egypt, and thank you Korrin for facilitating this.
  • 2009-04-07 00:03:15 Quin: Just a quick plug ;) If you do not have time to see the whole debate nor read the E! logs online, I recommend visiting ppapy.wordpress.com in a few hours - I should have a summary and highlights up for anyone who cares to read it.
  • 2009-04-07 00:03:38 Quin: For a little background, our candidates are not only spouses in-game but have in fact been married for eight years in real life. They have played since roughly the third week of the first tale.
  • 2009-04-07 00:04:29 Quin: And so, I present to you our candidates: Coyan and Astrina.
  • 2009-04-07 00:04:59 Coyan: hello, Egypt
  • 2009-04-07 00:05:53 Astrina: Hi Egypt :)
  • 2009-04-07 00:06:36 Quin: Astrina will answer questions first, and I may ask a clarifing question or followup question if I feel it necessary.
  • 2009-04-07 00:07:16 Quin: I will still be taking questions in /chat if anyone would like to submit them to me.
  • 2009-04-07 00:07:43 Quin: With the formalities out of the way, I'll present the first question:
  • 2009-04-07 00:07:59 Quin: What instances do you believe DP should use their ban powers? You may give an example from previous tales where you agreed with the actions of the current DPs. Or, inversely, what you would have done differently to avoid a ban.
  • 2009-04-07 00:08:58 Astrina: Our history shows that seven bans have been used in previous Tales. With the recently implemented DPE law, our choices are drastically improved over T1 or T2. My methods for deciding to ban, would be based on each individual circumstance and much discussion with other DPs as well as the Egyptian people.
  • 2009-04-07 00:09:18 Astrina: Defining exactly when or why I might use this power, would in itself defeat the process. To me, that would show I have already defined certain actions guilty before the actions have even occurred and the circumstances explained.
  • 2009-04-07 00:11:45 Coyan: I took the time to look over the bans from previous tellings that were recorded.
  • 2009-04-07 00:12:09 Coyan: I have to say, without knowing the full circumstances of those bans, it is hard to say if they were appropriate or not. I think situations like harassment that does not stop after the harasser has been spoken to about it, and all other means of squelching the harassment have been exhausted, may warrant a ban.
  • 2009-04-07 00:12:30 Coyan: I think at the end of the day though, what folks want to know is am I willing to use the ban if necessary. The answer is yes. Also, am I reserved enough to exhaust all other choices first? Again, the answer is yes.
  • 2009-04-07 00:14:35 Quin: Would you like a chance to respond, Astrina?
  • 2009-04-07 00:16:45 Astrina: I would agree with Coyan, at the end of the day, I too am willing to use the ban.
  • 2009-04-07 00:17:02 Quin: Alright. The second question:
  • 2009-04-07 00:17:15 Quin: What qualifications do you bring to DP? Have you been involved in resolving conflicts in ATITD and/or real life?
  • 2009-04-07 00:18:57 Astrina: I am just me, the experience that I bring to DP is not much more or less than many in ATITD. I can list off all my RL accomplishments, but those mean very little here. We have autonomy in this game and the majority of us dont need someone to show us the way, we do just fine on our own.
  • 2009-04-07 00:19:27 Astrina: My goals will not change, if I become DP. I will continue to do what I always have, work on research, throw parties, trade supplies and help gather people together to work on big projects. I care a great deal about the people in this game and I am old enough to know, that I know very little.
  • 2009-04-07 00:20:07 Coyan: What qualifies a person to be DP? Trust, Responsibility, or my skills at mediation? My real life experience may play a role in my abilities and judgment, but I could tell you I am a lawyer in real life and specialize in arbitration. Would that qualify me, or make you want to grief me? ;P
  • 2009-04-07 00:20:24 Coyan: Im not a lawyer. I have had real life experience in mediation, in management, and have been in positions of trust. But what honestly qualifies me is that I care where this game goes, and for the folks in this game. That gives me a sense of responsibility to help where I can as a DP, not my real life experiences.
  • 2009-04-07 00:21:51 Quin: Thank you both.
  • 2009-04-07 00:21:58 Quin: Third Question: From what you have seen from the DPs we have so far this tale, do you think they are doing a good enough job? Why or why not? If not, what will you do to improve the help we get from DPs?
  • 2009-04-07 00:23:18 Astrina: Kiya and Eldrad are our only DPs at this time.
  • 2009-04-07 00:23:29 Astrina: At this point, I dont feel either of them have had enough time in the position to define their level of “good”. I can say, Kiya has not been online in while, and has not been overly active. Eldrad, I see so much of, I might name my kids after him. ;p
  • 2009-04-07 00:24:26 Coyan: Honestly, its still very early in the telling. I hope that Kiya has not lost interest in the game, but that does happen. I have not asked Eldrad if he has done any DP type of things, but I am comfortable that he will do what is needed if the situation comes up.
  • 2009-04-07 00:24:38 Coyan: If I do get chosen to be DP, I hope to keep in fairly close contact with our current DPs and those that are chosen afterwards so that as a team, we can respond as needed.
  • 2009-04-07 00:25:22 Astrina: I too hope to work closely with other DP's. I really feel staying in touch is very important.
  • 2009-04-07 00:27:03 Quin: Beyond working closely with the other DPs, is there anything you more you personally would do to either expand or redirect the role of DP?
  • 2009-04-07 00:30:08 Astrina: I would like to see more interest in the DP process itself. Since it is no longer a test, it's really become more of a grind to many people. DP is still a very important role and we as the people must choose wisely. In general, I think the DP position needs more voice and more action to make it "feel" more a part of the game.
  • 2009-04-07 00:30:32 Coyan: I have thought about that, and I have an idea that I'm cooking up. Not that being DP will affect me doing it or not. Since DP is no longer a test drive process, I have some ideas about regionalizing it. I'm still working on the wording and plan on putting it up in the legal forum for comsumption.
  • 2009-04-07 00:31:38 Quin: Very interesting. You both shine with followup questions, looks like :)
  • 2009-04-07 00:31:56 Quin: Fourth Question: There has been a lot of criticism this election due to the candidates being each other's spouses. Critics say that we are voting for the "same person". How does each candidate respond to this criticism?
  • 2009-04-07 00:32:48 Astrina: Both Coyan and I have had to go through the same process to arrive here. We could not have planned this, if we tried. The semi-final round was difficult and the goal of that round was to pick the best person to move forward. Both Coyan and I received our groups confidence. In a way, that in itself should say a lot about who we are, as individuals and as a couple.
  • 2009-04-07 00:33:27 Astrina: Yes, we are married and no matter which way you vote, we both will have access to the result. At least, this way, you know we have both made it here, and earned the confidence of those along the way. Now its up to you to decide which of us fits the needs of Egypt.
  • 2009-04-07 00:34:37 Astrina: Besides, I make better cookies than Coyan. Everyone wants cookies right? :P
  • 2009-04-07 00:34:43 Coyan: Wife? <writes note to self, first ban goes to her>
  • 2009-04-07 00:34:52 Coyan: Honestly, we have both followed the path to this final step independently. We both are commited to helping folks. But, we are very different people, and just because I can play as my wife, does not mean I intend on doing so to play DP.
  • 2009-04-07 00:35:49 Coyan: If she is voted as our next DP that is her responsibility and position. I would not step into her body to take on the mantle of DP, unless all other choices were exhausted. Hopefully there is some comforted in the fact that we are both trusted to be considered.
  • 2009-04-07 00:36:00 Astrina: Hah, busted Mr...you sleep on the couch!
  • 2009-04-07 00:36:36 Coyan: I already have the pillow and sheets there, didn't think I was going to get away from that inevitabillity
  • 2009-04-07 00:37:42 Quin: I've talked to the GMs, so just to clafify something to the public: Unless you share passwords, a spouse cannot actually use the DP powers of the other.
  • 2009-04-07 00:38:18 Quin: Which, living in the same house I imagine the password issue is hard to prevent, this is mostly for future reference :)
  • 2009-04-07 00:39:12 Coyan: now where are my notes on how to change my password
  • 2009-04-07 00:39:21 Astrina: <---quickly changes her password :)
  • 2009-04-07 00:39:40 Quin: Here is my last pre-prepared question: What seperates you from the other candidate? Why are you a better candidate for DP?
  • 2009-04-07 00:40:55 Astrina: I am female, he is male? Seems good enough for me. LOL, sorry couldnt resist. ;p
  • 2009-04-07 00:41:21 Astrina: I would say that I am more of a world traveler than Coyan. I like to run the world and explore the land and the people. In that, I would say that my knowledge of what is going on around the world is likely to be greater.
  • 2009-04-07 00:41:59 Coyan: About 6 feet, just abit out of arms reach.
  • 2009-04-07 00:42:15 Coyan: I have always been about helping folks. For instance, rather than just make something for someone, I would rather show them how to make it themselves. When a new game system comes out, like alloys, I do what I can to contribute to the initial research and info.
  • 2009-04-07 00:42:31 Coyan: This does not distinguish me as a mediator, or a law writer. But I like to think I do everything in my power to help folks where I can.
  • 2009-04-07 00:43:32 Coyan: oh, and I keep all the sharp and heavy objects on my side of the office.
  • 2009-04-07 00:44:20 Quin: This question is specifically for Coyan: Do you think getting your name all over egypt on a flax seed will help you win this election?
  • 2009-04-07 00:45:11 Astrina: lol, I said last night he was passing out a business card with that! Sad part is, I helped him do it.
  • 2009-04-07 00:45:22 Coyan: only if the election ended 20 minutes after folks got it, Forgiving had a better one about 30 minutes after I passed a few around
  • 2009-04-07 00:46:56 Quin: Thank both of you. And a great deal of thanks go to Daniels and SamAdams for question support. With that, I would like to open questions to the public. Korrin will moderate still :)
  • 2009-04-07 00:47:35 Korrin: 1 question at a time, and each candidate a chance to respond.
  • 2009-04-07 00:47:51 Tzalaa: In my DP group, one person ran on a platform of cheese... what platform did you run on?
  • 2009-04-07 00:49:56 Coyan: mine was pretty straight forward, I see DP as a position of trust, responsibiity and service. I wanted to find another avenue to help folks.
  • 2009-04-07 00:50:59 Astrina: Starbucks would be my first choice. My platform was based on being me, I didnt try to rehash old speeches, nor pretend to be who I am not. I believe in the DP position and feel it's important we work together in the semi-final round to make the best choice.
  • 2009-04-07 00:51:18 Shazza: if you weren't a candidate, would you vote for the other person for DP, and if so, why?
  • 2009-04-07 00:52:18 Astrina: Yes, I would vote for Coyan in an instant. He gives his all to this game in more ways than I can count.
  • 2009-04-07 00:52:24 Coyan: absolutely, it helps that I have first hand experience in knowing that she is a good fit for the job. I could go on about her qualifications both as someone who cares, and someone that is responsible to a fault.
  • 2009-04-07 00:53:00 kuupid: ooo, you will give me a cookie if I vote for you ? ;)
  • 2009-04-07 00:53:32 Astrina: Only if you like chocolate ;p
  • 2009-04-07 00:53:45 Coyan: locks the chocolate box. I'm doomed, she played the cookie card
  • 2009-04-07 00:54:00 Dovie: if you lose....will you back your spouse?
  • 2009-04-07 00:55:10 Astrina: Yes, completely. He is a truly good person, in game and out. His choices have always been well thought out and I trust his decisions.
  • 2009-04-07 00:55:12 Coyan: Completely. I have always thought Astrina would be a great DP. That perspective hasn't changed at all.
  • 2009-04-07 00:55:56 Korrin: Because it is not a test, how do you see this DP role being different this tale from previous tales? and be honest.. who actually takes the garbage out on garbage night?
  • 2009-04-07 00:56:18 Astrina: lol our son!
  • 2009-04-07 00:56:59 Coyan: rofl, yeah, he does. Except when he forgets, then I do.
  • 2009-04-07 00:57:30 Coyan: I think this free's up DP to be changed into something that is more in line with a legal system. I actually asked Teppy about it, and he was open to the idea.
  • 2009-04-07 00:59:40 Astrina: As for DP being different, I think the position is truly what each individual makes of it. The only difference is it isnt a step forward in the leadership path. Nothing is defined, even when it was a test. Might be time to find more value, so more interest comes back to the position.
  • 2009-04-07 01:00:00 Dovie: one last question for me....whos the better frontman?
  • 2009-04-07 01:01:03 Coyan: she is prettier than I am.
  • 2009-04-07 01:01:13 Korrin: I'll agree with that
  • 2009-04-07 01:04:06 Astrina: lol, lets not talk about halloween here shall we?
  • 2009-04-07 01:04:07 Coyan: she certainly has more of a presence in Egypt, other than my special seed ploy, which seems to have had a lifespan of 30 minutes.
  • 2009-04-07 01:04:19 Astrina: I think we are both good in specific situations. Coyan tends to be more quiet about his helpful acts. I like to share, so I don't hesitate being out and about more chatting with people.
  • 2009-04-07 01:06:40 Astrina: And lets not forget about macros, that in itself has helped a whole lot of people from running away screaming about mining.
  • 2009-04-07 01:07:13 Astrina: And that, is all Coyan. He helps, but quietly. Always has.
  • 2009-04-07 01:07:46 Pyx: and he can belly dance pretty well, too. Although Maze is still Lord of the Dance.
  • 2009-04-07 01:08:19 Coyan: well, I have plenty of belly to dance with
  • 2009-04-07 01:09:59 Pyx: and now, with hearty congratulations to both of our candidates for a great debate. Would you like to post closing statements? Ladies first...
  • 2009-04-07 01:10:26 Dreasimy: If someone passed a Code of Conduct (granted CoC's are not coded yet as far as I know) and it said that (as an example) a DP should ban anyone who takes a date without saltpetering a date tree, and you were DP, would you do what the CoC said, or would you use your own judgement?
  • 2009-04-07 01:10:27 fryoj: Oh hell, those are coyan's mining macros. Sorry astrina, but I have to vote for him. lol
  • 2009-04-07 01:13:26 Coyan: Dreasimy, I would have to use my own judgement, if the code of conduct was passed with the intent of punishing those that do it maliciously, yep, damn straight I would ban them. But if it was someone who didn't know, a new player, no, but I would give him/her some instructions and saltpeter
  • 2009-04-07 01:15:26 Astrina: With the new choices of short-term bans, it's likely I would go that route. It feels more like a warning, than a permanent issue. Something that harsh, shouldnt be in the CoCs, so I would also work towards adjusting the law itself.
  • 2009-04-07 01:17:33 Dreasimy: I didn't ask it right, let's try this, if a CoC said that A DP should ban if a player picked a date for any reason without saltpeter in their inventory, would you adhere to the CoC or use your judgement :D
  • 2009-04-07 01:19:15 Astrina: The rules are defined and voted on by the citizens. I am also a citizen and if that were the case, I would follow the CoC.
  • 2009-04-07 01:19:38 Coyan: it sounds like you are asking if we are willing to exercise the DP ability, no matter how unorthadox the CoC is, if the people of Egypt voted a CoC into being. or to put it better, would we follow a non-binding law
  • 2009-04-07 01:20:11 Coyan: I think I would still use my judgement, if there was a law that bound me to an action, even if I didn't agree to it morally, I would do so, but a non-binding law to me is one that encourages prudence
  • 2009-04-07 01:20:13 Dreasimy: Yes sir :)
  • 2009-04-07 01:22:02 Astrina: If for some reason, a law that was poorly written passed...and they have...would I stand by the rule? I too, am willing to step outside the CoC, but I would first do my best to correct the law.
  • 2009-04-07 01:22:51 Orrin: What are your views on the Hot Topic: The latest Cooking Nerf
  • 2009-04-07 01:24:12 Astrina: Sadly, I had to manage a big event today, so I wasnt around to hear all the facts. I would hate to offer an opinion until I knew more of the details.
  • 2009-04-07 01:25:11 Coyan: I think it was a correction to a bug, that probably needs abit more thought applied to it on Teppy's part.
  • 2009-04-07 01:28:49 Astrina: In closing, both Coyan and I were shocked that we ended up in the final round together. In a way I am sad, and in another I am happy. We both have been in many DP rounds and to end up in the finals, against each other is certainly not what either of us wanted.
  • 2009-04-07 01:28:57 Astrina: No matter which way you vote, I will be happy. Both Coyan and I are dedicated to the game and to doing all we can to make it a better place. Either way you go, I honestly beleive you will have a good DP.
  • 2009-04-07 01:29:10 Astrina: Just don't forget, with me...you get cookies :)
  • 2009-04-07 01:31:13 Coyan: I know that many of you feel that you are voting on the same person, because we are married, it sorta defeats the purpose of voting at all. We are very different people, and although we have similar perspectives on what a DP is, an how to approach things as a DP. We would offer different perspectives in that position.
  • 2009-04-07 01:32:47 Coyan: I know that if Astrina wins, just like if another person was there that was chosen to move forward, that you would get a good candidate as DP. I feel I am also a great choice for the role, and hope you will consider each of us as different choices, with different strengths to offer.
  • 2009-04-07 01:34:22 Astrina: Thanks to everyone here, who took the time to question us and be involved.
  • 2009-04-07 01:34:28 Korrin: Well all, we have gone over our hour a bit, but it was a good discussion. Thank you Quin for your interview, and to our candidates for letting Egypt get to know you better. Thanks all for listening and your questions. I will now open e! up to regularly scheduled programming.. releasing posts now. Thanks all!
