Usi: In my opinion: one correct answer here would be: encourage Egypt to write a law. Individual mediation is always an option of course, but if everyone finds it offensive, there should be no problem passing a law. Amethyst: Fair enough stance. I'd prefer to leave law-making as last resort, rather than first. Amethyst: But that's just a difference priorities. We're both on the same track here. Usi: Teppy keeps the CoC KISS (keep it stupid simple) and he does that for a reason. The only thing he would take action against, is someone trying to take his server down, or seriously putting it to the test on purpose. Other than that, he leaves it up to us. I strongly believe in the law system. Amethyst: Mainly because I don't think it's practical to write a law about everything - especially since they are so difficult to get implemented (programmed). Amethyst: So if we can use social pressure, we should. Amethyst: Also, a concern about writing a law as first recourse, is that people think that the law is all there is to it. If it's allowed by the programming, then it's anything goes. Amethyst: I believe my approach encourages people to take more responsibility for their own actions. Usi: If you write laws correctly, they don't even need a lot of coding. Amethyst: that's right. but you pass a law against swastika compounds, someone goes and builds one that looks like a penis Usi: To me, there are 3 priorities in ruling, in the following order: Game CoC, then the law system, then the DP powers. Remember, this is a new land, with a new society. We have to invent everything ourselves here. We have to shape this society ourselves. We have to make our own law system. We might even implement a tax system one day. A DP is just a supplement, someone who acts on powers given to him by the title and by laws. Ari: Similar has been done. Amethyst: I'm sure it has, Ari :) Amethyst: Actually, I wouldn't be so bothered with a penis-compound as with a swastika one. It was just an example. Amethyst: On shaping the laws to shape our society, I agree Usi. Which is why I'd be trying to make sure any laws I sponsor are pro-active, rather than re-active. Usi: Well, in that case a law against swastica's would not work. Neither would a law against penis shaped cp's. However, a law empowering DP's (even a council of DP's) voting on whether or not a cp would be considered offensive and would have to go, would work. Usi: and that wouldn't even need any coding. Usi: But again, in that case the DP could only act against such things if there would be a law. Amethyst: There would be coding - because in that case the DPs would need some mechanism to take action against those compounds deemed offensive. Usi: well, it would be easy coding. he already has a voting system up. it works like a poll. he can put anything in there. it would be so much easier than to write software that recognizes certain words, or shapes. and way simpler than an anti-mass flax law. Usi: but without going into the whole technical thing of it: i stand by my opinion: CoC, Laws, DP. That order. The only freedom a DP has, is to personally and unofficially mediate. Amethyst: Could you tell me more about CoC? I was under the impression that it wasn't working, or not fully implemented. I also understand that it was more like guidelines for behaviour - so we have written guidelines rather than unwritten ones. What happens when someone breaks CoC? Usi: Just to be completely clear on this, with that statement, I'm only talking about the legal powers. This is still completely separate from anything else the DP does in his/her potential role as inspirator/motivator. Usi: Look up the CoC for the answers to your questions: Self, Utility, Billing, "Read the Rules of Conduct". It's all in there. Imho, it works fine as is. Knightmare: you know Amethyst, some women ARE in fact ok with being bought and sold... Amethyst: Not as slaves, Knight. Knightmare: or even rented Amethyst: Rented, I have no problem with. Knightmare: well sure, not as slaves, but I don't think mailorderbride really signifies any sort of slavery Amethyst: So long as it's her own choice and she's not pressured. Usi: maybe we should keep that discussion for another time, and not let that scroll everything else off please? Knightmare: I don't think DPs have any business meddling with people's names Knightmare: ever Knightmare: that's as bad as morality laws IRL Knightmare: which are terrible Knightmare: DP bans should not be used for game mechanic fixes in my opinion Usi: Even though I certainly don't agree with every name and cp shape I see here, I very much agree with you Knight. I stated that before, but it scrolled off already. Knightmare: I would rather ban someone for squating on a particular material that is needed to further society than ban a bad word in a name Amethyst: Knight - I think we all agree with you on that. No one was talking about DPs enforcing name changes or compound changes (apart from Usi's voting proposal on compounds) Amethyst: We were talking about the DP, in those cases, being a motivator and a moderator to debate on the subject - perhaps with a view to further action if the rest of Egypt thought it desirable. Usi: Well, I'll have to cut this discussion short here, at least from my end. I have to look up my bed, and make sure I take a few hours of sleep before I have to go to work again. Night night all :) Knightmare: haha, I know how that is. Good night Amethyst: G'night Usi - has been an awesome discussion! 2 days 3 hours left in this Demi-Pharaoh round. Ari: tic tic tic! Ari: Night usi ;) Knightmare: Ari, did you get to tag the gazelle? Ari: Yup! Usi: For the record: I didn't propose any law just yet. Was just making my point that it's not up to a DP to use powers over the shape of a cp, or over a name.
