Overview

The theory on gearboxes and how to design them was all well and good. Here's how I applied it.

My early builds are 2 output, I know I should be making 3 output just to make them more versatile. These aren't recommendations either, just records. I can already see that my first designs were not well optimised and I've only just begun.

Basic principles

  • use the ratio with the least gears to achieve the output
  • avoid large gears, they are way too expensive

I built this using the bold ratios, after I'd done a few and built a plan I looked back - clearly the italics would have been a better place to start.
