* Two suggestions really. 1) I think the wiki needs better orientation for the new player. 2) Have a proposal how to fix it. Propose to add a table with fast links to most useful resources - [[User:Akilan|like this]] (with more news+other stuff, of course).  I think it could help both new users and common users. (design lifted from the DF wiki, obviously, so all credit to them). I want to ask here - wouldn't want to deface the main page w/o asking people. (2009/06/12)

*Please, Please add a "Tools" link on the main sidebar. There is already a tools page showing most of the tools that are available and how to acquire them and many are only listed on this page. There is otherwise very few other links to this page in the wiki. I consider it a guide page for new players wondering how to acquire these tools and what tools are available that they may otherwise not know about. Akmenotep (2/25/09)

Known problems (comments and patches welcome!)

  • Skins need work across the whole site (may hold a contest for this..)
  • OpenID authentication should remember trust permissions rather than requiring frequent confirmation -- You can set your user preference to remember you and you won't be asked again.
  • Wiki mapping doesn't work! (or it does, but requires only on real world maps..) -- We now have a highres map of tale 4, and you can set markers at the correct coordinates. Still working on the editor. (Hatnofret 00:08, 17 December 2008 (EST))
  • Are we able to get the area squares/lines working properly? Currently nothing is drawn outside of a 1k (-500 -> 500) square around the origin. You can draw a line from -5000,-5000 to 5000,5000 and only the middle will show up. -Orrin
    • The problem seems to be a bug on the google side of things. Its already reported and I've added my voice to the people who want it fixed. However, Google doesn't tell us when it will get addressed (Hatnofret 19:13, 7 January 2009 (EST))
    • You might want to add your star to defect 715 to tell Google how much you care about it.

Suggestions

  • Two suggestions really. 1) I think better navigation here could help both new and experienced players quickly get to most-used content. 2) Propose to add a table with fast links to most useful resources - like this (will add other stuff that main page has, of course). (design lifted from the DF wiki - credit to them). Opinions? (Obviously want feedback before putting it up.) (2009/06/12)
  • Please, Please add a "Tools" link on the main sidebar.
  • enable file uploads, otherwise we're not going to be able to show any images! -- FIXED (Hatnofret, 12/14/2008)
  • A bit more contrast in the colours would be nice, especially in the blue links in the top right and the pale grey in the left hand menu.
  • I miss the category "Resources" in the left menu
    • (Just FYI, in the T3 Wiki, Resources showed up in the Index page, not at the top level. But having it at the top level this time is a good idea.) -- FIXED (Hatnofret, 12/14/2008)
  • Signing a 'post' with ~~~~ seems to use the EST timezone no matter what. Could this at least be changed to UTC (since it is converted to a string when an edit is submitted, it will of course just be one timezone for all)? ArmEagle 05:44, 15 December 2008 (EST)
Yes, its using the localtime on the server. I couldn't find any way to change that and I don't want the server to run in the wrong timezone to show UTC, it would affect all other timestamps too. (Hatnofret 20:52, 15 December 2008 (EST))
    • According to MediaWiki docs, we should be able to config variable $wgLocaltimezone[1]. That should affect macro substitution (like signatures) while other settings such as $wgLocalTZoffset can remain unchanged. I don't have a MediaWiki set up currently to test this. --Sola 10:58, 16 December 2008 (EST)
    • Yes, thats the variable that defines in which timezone the server runs. Its set to EST, since thats where the server is. It defines for example how timestamps in RecentChanges show up. Thats why I don't want to set it to GMT. (Hatnofret 23:00, 16 December 2008 (EST))
      • Although I agree that UTC would be much better (because everyone should know their own UTC offset, people should not have to know any one else's), can you at least change it to say NAEST?[2] Because it's not going to display correct EST time for anyone outside North America (for example, Australian EST is UTC+10. There are several different ESTs [3], which one is being reffered to is implicit when talking to people from the same place, making it a bad idea online). -- tlanthil 17:38, 2009-03-09 AEDT (Or should I just say EDT so I can confuse people? :)
  • Could we alphabetize the ATITD menu? As we add more main pages, it gets harder to scan easily. -- Shebi 15:29, 17 December 2008 (EST)
    • Sorted, except for Foraging, which should be indented under Guides, but that doesn't work. (Hatnofret 00:52, 18 December 2008 (EST))
  • I like not having the glaring white background on the large tables (resources, buildings), but the current background color doesn't provide sufficient contrast with the links. Perhaps a slightly lighter shade? -- Shebi 15:29, 17 December 2008 (EST)
    • The plan is to have a design competition for the entire wiki look and feel. (Hatnofret 00:52, 18 December 2008 (EST))
  • Would it be possible to allow uploading of xls files? I have a few excel files for working out the amount of flax needed for X canvas , rope etc and plan on making more for other processes -- (Lucindrea 17:09, 22 December 2008 (EST))
    • Done, allowed almost all types (.exe, etc blocked), some will be complained about but it won't stop you. .xls is on the "ok" list. (FaceAnkh 10:32, 25 December 2008 (EST))
    • However, it seems some Excel files are misdetected as Word documents, which results in the wiki rejecting them with a "corrupt upload" warning.. The best workaround for this seems to be to zip them up - other workarounds are a trifle dangerous :( FaceAnkh 19:09, 9 February 2009 (EST)
  • Add pages to the A Tale in the Desert navigation box on the left side: Levels, Recipies
  • Configure the google maps tag to point at a different url for tiles. I would like to add higher resolution map tiles for my camp area, maybe even based on double-F8 screenshots.
  • Can guild pages under Guilds/ be categorized into a different namespace, so you can exclude them from Recent Changes? Currently, you can select the (Main) namespace to avoid seeing changes to user pages, but there's no way to do the same for guild pages which also tend to have a lot of edit noise. --Inkoaten 01:24, 9 March 2009 (EST)
    • This sounds like a great idea. I second this.. is it possible to have done? Azure 03:01, 15 April 2009 (EST)
  • Can we get math rendering enabled? There's an equation button on the editor, but the resulting text doesn't actually render: <math>\sqrt{x}</math>. There's some info on what needs to be configured here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Math --Inkoaten 01:35, 9 March 2009 (EST)
  • A change to the atitd_map.js script will prevent that annoying "Data Unavailable" display if you zoom too much on a map.
var pic_tileLayers = [ new GTileLayer(new GCopyrightCollection() , 0, 6)];

That is, change the 17 to a 6

Navboxes

That's my current attempt at getting nav boxes working. I've copied all the templates from wikipedia that are necessary, but something's still off. I need an admin to take a look at this page and this page and see if they can tweak things to get the navbox working. My guess is that it's a CSS issue, so start with what that first link suggests about Common.CSS. I can't guarentee that I'll be paying attention on the wiki, so if try to /chat me in game when it's done/when you have any issues. --Ashana 19:28, 3 March 2009 (EST)

It was weird how I was adding a " in there and it was fixing it, but then ignoring the list styles. Then realized it just needed the width inserted. I added a couple of colors to let you also see what else can be done. Any other styling you want to do refer to Navbox Style Parameters. I'll try to remember to message ya in game tonight. --Darien 18:33, 7 April 2009 (EST)
