Why Southern Cross?
We are brothers and sisters under the stars!
We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties.
That oath was taken by hundreds of diggers calling themselves the Ballarat Reform League in 1854 at the Eureka Stockade. Their rallying flag was the distinctive Southern Cross. It was a short but significant colonial revolt that captured public imagination.
The confrontation went a bit like this...
A bunch of grubby, bearded gold-diggers yell at some uniformed British government officials, doing the rounds...
"Hey mate, these mining taxes are bloody too much! Give us a break, or we'll kick your dunny down." The crowd mutters, waving the Eureka Flag and assorted munitions: "yeah", "shove over", "you're meanies", "fair deal for diggers", "go home rummies".
The army marches up from the barracks down the road in formation and advances on the motley crowd. One of them mutters to his chum, "umm, you know - they do have a point".
The miners didn't have a chance and were routed in about 10 minutes. They were tried for high treason - but in the face of the ten thousand people that came to hear the trial the colonial authorities had little choice. The jury voted "not guilty" and the sudden gust of jubilation turned into a massive street party. Within 12 months, the colonial authorities had granted most of the demands of the Ballarat Reform League, including the right to vote and the repeal of the exorbitant mining taxes. The key ringleaders even ended up as Members of Parliament.
Why Ursa Major? If the Southern Cross is the most well known constellation in the southern hemisphere, then Ursa Major or the big bear holds that honour for the northern hemisphere. It is the most visible constellation (it includes the Big Dipper) and a source of thousands of myths in many cultures.
However, for the truly geeky, Ursa Major (Mikhail Uriokovitch Ursus) is a also a fictional character. He's a mutant in the Marvel Comics universe, and a former member of the Soviet Super-Soldiers. While transformed, Ursa Major possesses superhuman strength, stamina and resistance to physical injury, and can even beat The Hulk, believe it or not!
