Quin's Technique Guides

These are the tricks I have learned to make the skill-intensive portions of the game easier. They're pretty comprehensive, but if you feel I am missing something, /chat me at let me know!

Charcoal

General Tips

If you're like me, it might help to understand the 'processes' going on within the Charcoal Hearth or Charcoal Oven. These are general guidelines and based on observation more then anything. I don't mind doing one-on-one tutoring, just /chat me and ask. I'll even demonstrate a run and let you keep the cc.

  • Practice!
    • Don't be cocky, you'll need to get the hang of this, so start on a Charcoal Hearth with regulator of 3 or so. If you still have problems, slow it down more until you feel comfortable.
  • Wood + Oxygen = More Heat
    • Thus, don't close the vent if the air is rising & temp is low, instead add more wood.
    • As a general rule, keep Oxygen below wood (by either adding wood or throttling the vent, more on that below in Mode 1 and Mode 2
  • Heat + Oxygen/2 = Danger Bar
    • This is why you keep air low when temperature is high.
    • However, if temperature gets REALLY high, it doesn't necessarily need much Oxygen - so add water to be safe!
  • Water needs vent open.
    • It's natural after some practice to want to close the vent and keep Oxygen low if you've been following my guidelines, but the danger bar will actually drop faster if normalize the vent after you add water.

Controls

Three Endings - Good, Bad, and Ugly.

  • Good. The progress bar fills and becomes green. It has become charcoal! Now cool it down (I usually close the vent, let Oxygen drop to 0, then max vent to cool it.)

Mode 1 - Wood Control

Mode 2 - Vent Control

Emergency Recovery Something happened. You added too much water, or you let air get too high/low while temp was low. Whatever it was, your temperature is dropping like a stone and your progress bar is still blue! NOTE: This will NOT work if the fire has been put out (Oxygen reached 0).

General Tips: In theory, you should only need ever need to use 2 charcoal at a time. This is all about concentration.
