Debate occurred on Saturday February 16th at 03:00 GMT (This was Friday February 15th at 10:00 PM Eastern Time (US))

Debate between Renard and Porthos from February 16, 2013

Note, Renard was unable to make it to the debate due to connection issues.
He posted responses to Worship Station following the debate, and those responses have been included in italics.

GHawkins: *Cue intro music*
GHawkins: Welcome to the latest DP debate. For the duration of the debate, normal Worship Station deadair will be halted (you can use L2PBS for worship station related posts during this period). The candidates in this election are Porthos and Renard!
GHawkins: Unfortunately Renard has not appeared, but Porthos is here and has agreed to respond to questions even if he's all alone. Hopefully we will hear from Renard shortly.
GHawkins: If you have questions that you would like to submit during the debate, just submit them to Worship Station or via Chat to GHawkins but please note that comments, discussion, personal attacks, and redundant questions will be tabled or asked to be rephrased. Also, I will do my best to also reframe any candidate-specific questions so that all candidates can answer them (though your original question will remain intact for the person you specified.)
Porthos: It is an honor to be in the final running as a Demi-Pharaoh candidate. Thank you to GHawkins for taking the reins of moderating the DP hearing.
GHawkins: And now, we begin!

FIRST QUESTION For those who have never had the opportunity to interact with you before can you share a little about yourself, what you enjoy about ATITD as well as how long you have been playing?

Porthos: I've played in T1, T2, T5, and this tale.
Porthos: Tale 3 and 4 are the only ones I wasn't in.
Porthos: My favorite tests are in Thought & Body.
Porthos: This tale I am having alot of fun exploring the fishing system.
GHawkins: Thank you Porthos.
Renard: I'm playing since T4 ,I'm a french Canadian living in Quebec,in RL I have my own business of contractor in construction. my favorite test are in Body and Worship but mostly like every thing in the game.

SECOND QUESTION: If you win this election you will pass the test of the Demi-Pharaoh and be our 15th DP of this tale. There are a variety of points of view on what the role of DP should and shouldn't be, what is yours?

Porthos: Demi-Pharaoh is just a position, the role is defined by the players naturually
Porthos: Of course, not to abuse the ban power is paramount
Porthos: ome think DP's role is also as a resolver of disputes, but anyone can act as a moderator, if both parties want a DP to moderate then yes.
Porthos: sorry that should be some think *
Porthos: Also I personally see the DP as a pact with the player base to play through thick and thin until the tale ends.
Porthos: Helping with the leadership monument is important too, I will be a Sage and Renard an Oracle if elected to the office.
Porthos: What a DP shouldn't be is a judge, jury and executioner of players that displease them.

THIRD QUESTION: How would you handle it, as DP, if you were involved in an interpersonal conflict with another player? On a related note, how would you handle it if a close personal friend or guildmate made a complaint, or had a complaint made against them, and were seeking your intervention as DP and possibly a ban?

Porthos: I would first of all recuse myself and ask a 3rd party to step in.
Porthos: I would not consider using a permanent ban in any case, not when the AGA law is a better tool for Egypt as a whole to decide for issues that affect the whole community.

FOURTH QUESTION: Speaking of the Anti-Griefer's Act (AGA), under what circumstances would you consider utilizing the tools created by the (AGA) law? What do you consider 'griefing'? Do you feel the AGA has been used well so far?

Porthos: Mostly common sense, people know griefing when they see it. If it's just against an individual than a moderation is probably the best solution.
Porthos: Yes, the AGA has been used wisely thus far. I even voted Pharaoh out (that was a joke AGA so an exception)

FIFTH QUESTION: Where is the tipping point between drama for entertainment's sake and drama that is griefing?

GHawkins: Fifth question comes from the audience:
cate: Where is the tipping point between drama for entertainment's sake and drama that is griefing?
Porthos: Pharaoh is the best at creating drama. Some players also thrive on drama, it is a fine line. If nearly no one takes it seriously and as a joke then it's entertainment.
Porthos: So Pharaoh creates griefing drama that entertains him in a nutshell :D
GHawkins: And yet our attempts to have him banned under the AGA were for naught.
Porthos: yes I did not lobby hard enough I apologize

SIXTH QUESTION: As some specific examples, would you consider any of the following playstyles as worthy of DP intervention? Obelisk queue violation, bonfiring of a clay patches to prevent others from building, overweighing Phoenix runners (test or event) with bricks, using strategically placed incense to interupt Phoenix runners, using large quantities of alts to rig elections, mentorship advancement, or other test passes?

Porthos: Absolutely not. I don't condone any of those, but to ask for DP intervention for any of those is quite silly :)
Porthos: The only case I would use a temporary ban is if a player was actively blowing up Chariot Stops and public art/work facilities for a cool-off period while the AGA can be invoked.

SEVENTH QUESTION: What other powers would you like to see DPs hold, in the intersts of improving game play?

Porthos: I don't think the DP needs any more power. Personally I would rather the DP not be a test, but an office held
Porthos: Teppy is the one we need to improve game play, by being more involved with the player base

EIGHTH QUESTION: As we are nearing the end of tale, how do you perceive the role of DP changing with the reduced game population?

Porthos: As I stated I treat it as a pact with the player base to stay active in the tale.
Porthos: DP slots are limited so we need for elected DPs to stay with us, barring RL issues of course, so it is unfortunate when DPs quit or vanish due to becoming bored.

NINTH QUESTION: Does anyone have access to login to your account? (i.e., would any person other than yourself ever have access to your ban powers)? Note: spouselog does not allow access to ban powers.

Porthos: Nope.
Renard: Q 9 :only my real life spouse Bessodia know it,but I will change it if I became a DP.

TENTH QUESTION: what are your recommendations for keeping the population engaged and not bored?

GHawkins: Tenth question from the audience:
cate: another question...what are your recommendations for keeping the population engaged and not bored?
Porthos: I find the meta-game to be very intersting. There are so many different meta-goals that can be personally set.
Porthos: The event team is doing an awesome job recently with the recent events and I applaud them
Porthos: For example one of my goals is to catch all 49 fish this tale
Porthos: Another good meta-goal involves herb gathering
Renard: Q 10: well many thing can do,like trying to complete wines books by finding new flavors or improving your foraging techniques, try some chemistry or mutagenic .also fishing, beers or cooking.

ELEVENTH QUESTION: Have you played ATITD under other names in this tale or past ones, and if so, what were the names you played under?

Porthos: As Porthos, I've played in T1, T2, T5, and this tale.
Porthos: I played an alt Ophelia in T5, but she drowned trying to catch oysters :(
Porthos: This tale I don't own any alts or mules.
Renard: Q 11: I only play under Renard name.

TWELFTH QUESTION: When you come across a large camp eligable for DPA (or whatever the acronym is this tale)-ing, what do you do? What if there are more people there than just you waiting for the timer to click over allowing ownership?

Porthos: Nothing.
Porthos: I believe other than trial stuff clutter, there is one thing I have used the DPA on
Porthos: I DPA'ed a Blank Raeli Mosaic in A&P art compound, and made my raeli mosaic on it. If Wulffgrymm ever returns I will make him a new one :)
Renard: Q 12: only thing I DPA are small camp from trial accont .

THIRTEENTH QUESTION: If the general consensus of the rest of the DPs were that that person should not be banned, but you felt strongly that they should, what would you do?

Porthos: I value the input of other DPs, but if I strongly felt that they had a personal bias for some unfanthomable reason, I would submit the AGA for Egypt to decide as a whole
Renard: Q 13: also agree with Porthos.

FOURTEENTH QUESTION: Porthos, you've mentioned that you will be a Sage if elected. While Kuupid is well known as our first and only Oracle of Leadership, she has been absent lately due to various unavoidable issues. If it came down to it, what would it take to push you to Oracle?

Porthos: I certainly pray that kuupid will return to us shortly
Porthos: That being said, in the unfortunate case it is just a matter of getting mentor shrines to get me to Oracle, which could be done quickly abusing the hegemon powers, if it was absolutely needed.
Renard: Q 14: I would say I used the Hegemon power for my 2 last mentor shrine.

FIFTEENTH QUESTION: Several months ago, now inactive player Ethros caused a bit of a stir by actively seeking Mentorship Shrines in Bazaar in exchange for basic supplies like a brick machine. If it became clear that a new Oracle is necessary, would you consider such tactics viable or would you reject taking such a course of action yourself?

Porthos: If lacking an Oracle was the thing holding back a monument at end game, then yes. I wouldn't buy them or bribe for them, but I wouldn't discourage others from giving someone a mentor shrine just to get them to Oracle
Renard: Q 15 : no I would never try to buy them .

CANDIDATE STATEMENT: I would like each of you to wrap up now and tell Egypt what they will get in a DP by voting for you. And if you do indeed want them to vote for you, please include why you would like them to.

Porthos: I would certainly greatly appreciate being elected to Demi-Pharaoh. I strive to be fair and honest in my play, and would continue this if elected to DP.
Porthos: Thank you again for hosting GHawkins, good luck to my fellow candidate Renard, and thank you Egypt for considering me for Demi-Pharaoh :)
Renard: at last I would be glad and honor to be elected the new DP,Thanks in advance to all who's voting for me, I think Porthos and I are some sort of good players and we can both be a good DP . Good luck.

GHawkins: And with that I am pleased to draw to a close the very first DP debate of this telling not to make reference to Geodude!
GHawkins: Damn, failed again. We'll try again next month. Farewell Egypt, and don't forget to vote for DP! Porthos: do'h
GHawkins: I will send a message to Renard and give him a chance to reply to the questions if he would like.
GHawkins: I have a copy of all of the questions and responses and will find somewhere to host them. Link to come later tonight.
Porthos: thanks again GHawkins you did a great job, and please all make your vote heard
