Debate between Blueshift and Remases from June 25, 2014

GHawkins *Cue intro music*
GHawkins Hello Egypt and welcome to the DemiPharaoh Debate between Blueshift and Remases.
GHawkins For the duration of the debate, normal Worship Station deadair will be halted (you can use L2PBS for worship station related posts during this period).
GHawkins If you have questions that you would like to submit during the debate, just submit them to Worship Station or via /chat to GHawkins but please note that comments, discussion, personal attacks, and redundant questions will be tabled or asked to be rephrased. Also, I will do my best to also reframe any candidate-specific questions so that all candidates can answer them (though your original question will remain intact for the person you specified.)

FIRST QUESTION For those who have never had the opportunity to interact with you before can you share a little about yourself, what you enjoy about ATITD as well as how long you have been playing?

Remases I first played in the original beta, then in T1 and later in T3. I returned again about 4 months ago.
Remases I enjoy exploring and building in general, but in terms of this game that tends to mean a lot of herbing, prospecting, hunting cicada cages along with gathering resources and expanding compounds, helping with public works and such.
Remases I admit to being independent in nature, but also enjoy working with groups, including organizing them at times, on larger projects.
Blueshift Hello everyone! I have been playing ATiD since T4 (bastet veteran). I like to do fishing, and design things in the game like thought puzzles. And of course the very friendly community keeps me here
GHawkins Alright, thank you both. Forgive the technical difficulties, they will of course be edited to make me look good/competent on the finalized wiki transcript.

SECOND QUESTION: If you win this election you will pass the test of the Demi-Pharaoh and be our 33rd DP of this tale. There are a variety of points of view on what the role of DP should and shouldn't be, what is yours, especially now that we're in an unprecedented free to play era.

Blueshift The DP is a person to talk to about interplayer conflicts, who can help mediate and provide an impartial solution. The free-to-play era could bring with it a number of challenges
Blueshift it could be easier than ever for a griefer to enter the game, and the DP must be vigilant to protect against such invasions into the game
Remases I agree with Blueshift, but suspect the threats of griefers is not all that large. My main expectation would be to be of service, in informing and assisting where needed.
Remases This could include conflict resolution, but I would mostly expect to provide advice, tips, things of that nature.

THIRD QUESTION: Some of the things you've mentioned as tasks for the DP include things not directly related to the DP powers. Can you provide examples of when you've done those things already, and how would being DP help you continue to accomplish those tasks?

Blueshift One example of mediation that I've been involved with. I helped to run a plantation guild in T5. A certain player was having their trees tended but not helping the other members out
Blueshift I was able to contact the player and explain that the other players were putting in work, and so he should be helping as well. It worked, and the conflict was resolved. All it took was for someone to ask, to communicate the problem effectively
Remases Mainly, DP would add some visibility and a sort of mantle of authority. A sort of. Being active in River Plains public works and generally aiming to greet and ask obvious newcomers if they need any questions answered or help with getting set.

FOURTH QUESTION: How would you handle it, as DP, if you were involved in an interpersonal conflict with another player? On a related note, how would you handle it if a close personal friend or guildmate made a complaint, or had a complaint made against them, and were seeking your intervention as DP and possibly a ban?

Remases I have had some personal involvement in conflict with another player. I communicated. We sorted it out. It can be tricky where the players involved don't speak the same primary languages. But good intentions and a bit of effort can generally get it done.
Remases Where friends were involved, the important thing would be to try to remain impartial and looks at the situation from all sides. We are human and all have emotions that can come into play, but being conscious of them can minimize their affects.
Remases Investigating all sides is key. Witness reports are by definition subjective.
Blueshift I would never consider using the power of the DP if the conflict in question related to me or a close friend. If the problem was very serious I would contact one of the other DPs to mediate, to be impartial.

FIFTH QUESTION: Under what circumstances would you consider utilizing the tools created by the Anti-Griefer's Act (AGA) law? What do you consider 'griefing'? Do you feel the AGA has been used well so far?

Blueshift Griefing is a premeditated act to harm the other players in the game, such as blowing up CSs or woodplaning someone's compound. I feel it was effectively used earlier in the telling to solve a serious issue
Blueshift As I said before, that issue could certainly arise again, and if it did I would consult with the other DPs to see if using the AGA is appropriate
Remases Griefing is, to me, when one player does something for no other reason than to annoy or negatively affect the game experience of other players.
Remases I haven't seen the AGA used so far, so have no opinion on its past use. It might be useful in cases of established players becoming a problem, but with FTP the typical griefer is apt to be more like we saw recently, one that says a lot of things in chat solely to annoy everyone.
Remases I am not sure the AGA can help in those situations.

SIXTH QUESTION: The AGA is one power that the DPs have in their toolkit, what other powers would you like to see DPs hold, in the interests of improving game play and making you more effective in meeting your stated goals?

Blueshift At the moment, I feel that the DPs have enough power in the game to be a positive influence without being superior to other nonDP players. I think that all the players should put their ideas on how to improve the game on the wiki for T7 improvements
Remases I am not sure code-enforced or code-backed powers are worth the potential side effects. This is at base a social game and it's better to use normal social techniques where possible.
Remases (of course, I know some people who would love me to have the power to predict ibis schedules...)

SEVENTH QUESTION: Does anyone have access to login to your account? (i.e., would any person other than yourself ever have access to your ban powers)? Note: spouselog does not allow access to ban powers.

Remases No.
Blueshift Nope! Just me

EIGHTH QUESTION: Have you played ATITD under other names in this tale or past ones, and if so, what were the names you played under?

Blueshift No, I have always been Blueshift. sometimes people get me confused with BlueGrass but that is another player :)
Remases This is a tough one! My name now is Remases because I couldn't remember my earlier names.
Remases I did some research and know one was Narafeti and another Imradan. I have since brought Narafeti back too.
Remases There may have been others, but I haven't located any evidence. (Too many games over the years, and I tend to not always use the same ones.)

NINTH QUESTION: If the general consensus of the rest of the DPs were that a person should not be banned, but you felt strongly that they should, what would you do?

Remases I wasn't aware DPs were governed by consensus. How would one be determined when so few prior DPs are around? I would use my judgment, that's the job as I understand it.
Blueshift I think that one DP should not go rogue. I would seriously have to question my own judgement in the matter and excuse myself from the conflict, especially if many DPs were against it

TENTH QUESTION: Select a question that you wish had been asked during this debate and answer it for yourself. Also, answer the question from the other candidate.

Blueshift What would you do if another DP began acting maliciously, abusing their power?
Blueshift Since DPs can't be banned by other DPs, if communication fails I would spearhead a campaign to put a law on the ballot stripping them of their DP powers
Remases I would contact management as a DP abusing powers could seriously affect the game and no other course of action would be likely to produce results soon enough to avoid that.
Remases I can't think of any question to pose.
GHawkins I can think of no greater compliment to my completeness as moderator of the discussion.
Remases Indeed, fine job! :)
Blueshift Thank you, GHawkins, for hosting this debate :)
GHawkins Not done yet!

CANDIDATE STATEMENT: We're running about an hour and I'm sure people are getting tired of my blathering, so I would like each of you to wrap up now and tell Egypt what they will get in a DP by voting for you. And if you do indeed want them to vote for you, please include why you would like them to.

Blueshift If you vote for me, you will get a level-headed, responsible DP to help make Egypt a friendlier place. I would love to have the opportunity to help Egypt by being a DP this telling.
Remases Thanks for putting up with this, people of Egypt. I would like to be demi-pharoah because it would involve me more in the social aspect of the game. I would like your vote. I will strive to deserve it, if I am honored with it. And I will try to inject a bit of levity to life in Egypt, not just seriousness.

GHawkins Thank you to both candidates for joining us for the DP debate. It's actually rather early in the election cycle so you've got time to ponder the decision and get in touch with the candidates individually if you have further questions.
GHawkins Thank you also for those who listen in or read up on this debate on the wiki (soon) to make an informed decision.
GHawkins Be informed, vote early, and vote as often as you like since only your latest vote counts anyways. Good luck to both candidates.
