Phosphorescent, Prickly, Spotted

This page serves as a repository of research notes on Toxin OE08, the eighth mutagen unlocked in Old Egypt by Renard. It uses 5 Phosphorescent, Prickly, Spotted (Negative to Fuzzy Hairy Mottled) moss and 1 Cobra Hood, 2 Heart of Ash mushrooms.

First mutation test: L-Vampire R-Silken

Vampire's stamen is now orange, so an IO was replaced by IY, no change is apparent on the Silken.

Second mutation test: L-Silken R-Vampire

Vampire's stamen is now orange, so an IO was replaced by IY, no change is apparent on the Silken.

Discussion and next step

It's clear that the mutagen hits just left of center on both splints.

It's either 8 or 9 on the Silken.

Fracture: ROYG ROYGYOR
Left Splint: 8-9

This is a natural choice to be testing on since the gene affected will create dramatic effects.

Clarity: IRIR IOIO IYIY GORR GROR
Left Splint: 16-18
Right Splint: 16-18
Since the range is over two alleles, seeing which part of the range is affected should be straightforward.

This could prove useful later, but for now the range seems too broad.

Third mutation test: L-Clarity R-Fracture

Clarity has lost magenta in the north stamen and is now dwarf. Fracture is double giant and has magenta in north petals.

A Morning-Dusk double cross has a 50% chance of disrupting both alleles and being uninterpretable. The other three possible combinations have unique interpretations. Not great odds, but it's something to work with.

Discussion and next step

The possible genes affected on Crimson are still unchanged. Ideally we would add an I to the range which would tell us precisely what genes were affected, but no lilies provide an I where we need it. Crown is still somewhat ambiguous.

This is a difficult region of crown to test in, but if neither lily is changed at least that will provide some information.

Seventh mutation test: L-Crimson, R-Crown

Both lilies appear unchanged. Left-Crimson: 52-53 (O) Right-Crown: 18 (O)

Eighth mutation test: L-Crown, R-Crimson

Something is different! Crown appears unchanged, but Crimson has lost a magenta in the south petals. This might be caused by Crown losing a V and replacing any of Crimson's genes, or Crown's O replacing Crimson's G.

Discussion and next step

There is still some ambiguity, and any steps we can take to clear up the gene ranges are potentially useful. Let's test to see what gene is being removed from Crown on the Left splint. Delicate will serve our purposes, since the gene will be placed after an I on Delicate. If more Magenta can be found in the stamen, an O was moved over. If color is simply missing and not replaced, a V.

Ninth mutation test: L-Crown, R-Delicate

Delicate's outer stamen is now Magenta-4 Yellow-2 Left-Crown: 18 (O)

Final discussion

Since we know an O was transferred from Crown on the left, that leads us to the result:<bCrr> Right-Crimson 51(G)

Additionally, Crown has narrowed down the splint range enough that only one option exists for left-Crimson.

We now know all standard lily genes this toxin affects.
