Mottled, Smelly, Spotted

This page serves as a repository of research notes on Toxin OE03, the second mutagen unlocked in Old Egypt by Renard. It uses 3 Mottled, Smelly, Spotted (Negative to Calico,Dry,Slimy) moss and 3 Spiderling mushrooms.

First mutation test: L-Vampire R-Silken

No change to either flower.

Second mutation test: L-Silken R-Vampire

An IO on Vampire is missing. No change is apparent on the silken.

Next step

Not much to go on yet. There is still a pretty broad range on what gene has been affected on the right. While still facing so many unknowns, a useful double cross is Delicate-Fracture. Both have few genes with noticeable effect, and if we can determine exactly what gene is affected on the Fracture it will tell us what was affected on Silken too since they both have the same number of genes.

Third mutation test: L-Delicate R-Fracture

On the left, a yellow has been removed from the outer stamen, but yellow is now visible all the way into the inner stamen. An IYIY has been replaced with IYYY.

Fracture is now a Semidwarf, so a Giant allele has been broken and the mutagen affects the left part of the genome when the flower is on the right splint.

Fourth mutation test: L-Fracture R-Delicate

On the left, no change is apparent to the Fracture. Genes 12-14, somewhat right of center, are not part of any functional allele of Fracture, so they are a likely target.

On the right, the outer stamen is missing some magenta, further evidence that the gene affected on the right splint is left of center.

Next step

The fact that the affected gene on the right splint is left of center is quite informative. Since an IO allele was broken on Vampire in the second test, that narrows the possible gene range to 5 or 6. That brings the range on the right splint to 33.333-50.000%

We know more about the right splint. On Fracture, one of the first seven genes were effected. This would indicate that the range on the right splint is from 0-38.889%. Therefore the range on the right splint is from 33.333%-38.889%.

That eliminates Right-Vampire 6(O) as a possibility.
Right-Vampire 5(I)

On an 18 genome set like Silken or Fracture, the range on the right has become 7.
Right-Silken 7(Y)
Right-Fracture 7(Y)

On the 16 genome of Delicate, that limits the range on the right splint to 6 or 7. Only 6 is a possibility, since 7 would have resulted in a yellow stamen being disrupted instead of magenta. Right-Delicate 6(O)

Now that we've characterized the right splint, what do we know about the left?

From test 4, an O was taken from Delicate and place on Fracture with no apparent change on Fracture, but Delicate has changed so we know it wasn't simply replaced by another O. 12-14 (GOR) can be replaced without altering Fracture's appearance. It wasn't 13, because that would cause no change to Delicate. It's not 14 since the cyan color would be visible on Delicate's stamen. That leaves us with:
Left-Fracture 12(G)
Left-Silken 12(G)
which does not contradict the results of test 2.

That also limits the range of Vampire to gene 8.
Left-Vampire 8(Y)
Which confirms the results from test 1.

For the 16 gene Delicate, that narrows the left-splint range down to gene 10 or 11, which must be 11 to get the IYYY allele noted earlier.
Left-Delicate 11

Now we can move on to larger genomes. Crown-Clarity double cross!

Fifth mutation test: Left-Crown Right-Clarity

Sixth mutation test: Left-Clarity Right-Crown
