Some thoughts about the DP

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

C. S. Lewis

Greetings

My Egyptian name is Sabuli and, suddenly, I find myself in the list of candidates for the DP election. I don't consider myself a leader. As a matter of fact, I don't even like the word leader. A so called "leader" has been the ruin of the country where I was born. Not even God is a leader because He doesn't say us what to do: He gave us free will. And now I live in a country whose founders wisely knew how dangerous leaders can be and created the system of checks and balances (that proved to be a brilliant idea) to conjurate those dangers.

But now I think that the DP is not a leader, but sort of a judge. Human societies have laws and judges are necessary. (Some justices in the Supreme Court seem to think now that their role is to make the laws more than apply them, but that is another story). In the final round Bobophet made me see the DP as a mediator, and l liked that view.

The DP is always associated with the word "ban" because that is his only real power. My personal opinion is that in very special situations, the ban could be the needed solution. But that it cannot be a personal decision but the result of a consult with other DPs. The Supreme Court has nine justices and a jury twelve members.

There are names that I didn't want to see in this list because I knew that they were players that, once they get some power, they would abuse it, and the ban power is a dangerous one. Fortunately, none of them are here. I think that all of the candidates in the list would be very good DPs, some of them are even very close friends of mine and one of them has been my DP forecast for a long time. Whatever is the final outcome, I'll be very happy with it.

I don't want to bore you too much. This is all what I wanted to say.

My best regards

Sabuli

Bureocracy "Come tomorrow"

Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.

Benjamin Franklin

I know that I've given the members of the bureau more freedom than executives use to give (I've been in other bureaus), that the bureau is growing more than expected and that increases the risk of a seize. But I'll rather run that risk than have members that are puppets without will. I don't say who to hire, I only want to be told first and reserve the right of some vetoes. So hire wisely and keep me posted!
